The Spice Girls
beginning was in 1994 when the call went out for females - 18 to 23, having
the ability to sing/dance. Spice Girls group consists of five young women,
Melanie Chisholm, Geri Halliwell, Melanie Brown, Victoria Adams and Michelle
Stephenson who embraced merchandising and introduced the term Girl Power into
popular discourse.
The Spice Girls
became pop culture sensations after their colossal hit "Wannabe" that was
released on July 8, 1996 in the United Kingdom., and remained on the charts
with their follow up album, Spiceworld. This group is considered as the one of
the biggest selling female groups of all time. The Spice Girls released their
debut album called Spice in Europe in November 1996. The success of this was
unprecedented and drew comparisons to Beatlemania due to the sheer volume of
interest in the group.
As their popularity
grew they coined the phrase "Girl Power", which immediately caught on with
teen-age girls of every language. They were given nicknames by a teen
magazine, Posh, Baby, Scary, Ginger and Sporty Spice. Their attitude may have
packed more punch than their voices, but at the same time their talent as
performers, as well as long list of catchy songs, attractiveness, and business
savvy have made them not only huge influences on young female teenagers around
the world, but also an international pop superstars.
The Spice Girls group
consisted of five members but on May 31, 1998, Geri Halliwell announced her
departure from the Spice Girls. Geri’s departure from the group shocked fans
and became one of the biggest entertainment news stories of the year. The four
remaining girls were adamant though that the group would carry on.
The Spice Girls won
two Brit Award in 1997, the same year they were voted best group at the MTV
Europe Awards. The Spice Girls have smashed most world-wide record books in
their own way as much as the Beatles did in the Sixties.
